What Is a Soft Start?

Starting daycare for the first time can feel overwhelming for both children and parents. A new environment, unfamiliar routines, and separation from family can bring up many emotions. At Kamukoti, we support families through this transition with a process called a soft start.

A soft start is a gradual introduction to kindergarten life. The goal is to help children build trust with their teachers, become familiar with the daily routine, and feel safe and comfortable in their new environment.

Before the child begins daycare, we arrange a starting conversation with the parents. During this meeting, we discuss important information about the child, such as eating and sleeping habits, toilet routines, personality, interests, strengths, and areas where they may need extra support. Hearing directly from parents helps us better understand each child and provide the best possible care from the very beginning.

Together with the parents, we create a plan to gradually increase the child’s time at kindergarten over the course of the first week.

On the first day, the child and parent usually join the group during outdoor playtime. This gives the child an opportunity to explore the yard, observe the other children, and begin interacting with the teachers in a relaxed setting. Before the group goes inside, the family says goodbye for the day.

On the second day, the child joins the group in the morning for circle time and activities. This allows them to experience indoor playtime and begin learning the daily routine. After outdoor playtime, the child heads home before lunch.

On the third day, the child stays for lunch as well. At this stage, we ask the parents to step away for a short period, usually 15–30 minutes, so we can gently observe how the child reacts to being without them. Some children adjust quickly, while others need more reassurance. Throughout this process, staff stay in close contact with parents through messages and updates. Depending on how the child is coping, parents may return sooner or stay away a little longer. If all goes well, the day ends after lunch.

On the fourth day, parents say goodbye at the start of the morning circle, and the child spends more independent time with the group. Staff continue to send updates and photos throughout the morning to help reassure parents and keep them informed. If the child becomes too distressed, parents can return earlier. Otherwise, pickup takes place after lunch.

On the fifth day, the child follows the full morning routine and stays for nap time for the first time. We recommend that parents remain nearby during this stage in case the child has difficulty settling down to sleep in a new environment. If the child wakes up and sees a familiar face soon after, it can help them feel more secure and supported.

If the week has gone smoothly, the child usually begins attending full days the following week. If the child needs more time to adjust, we can extend the soft start period and continue at a pace that feels comfortable for the family.

Throughout the process, our staff work closely with parents to support both the child’s needs and the family’s schedule. The most important part of a soft start is helping the child feel safe, supported, and connected to trusted adults who can comfort them when needed.

By easing children gradually into daycare life, we help reduce stress and build trust between the child, parents, and teachers. Starting daycare is a major milestone, and a soft start can make the transition feel calmer, gentler, and more positive for everyone involved.
